Adding new networks

Top  Previous  Next

When you first start ENT NetCenter, you probably won't have any networks defined. So, one of the first things that you will want to do is add a new network. You can add a new network from the Networks area of ENT NetCenter, by clicking on the New Network button.

Button_New_Network

This will open the Network Wizard which will allow you to define the parameters for your new network.

Network_Wizard_Type

On the first page of the network wizard you can select the type of network that you want to add to your IT inventory. This can be either a range of IP addresses or a Domain/Workgroup. To specify an IP Range, enter the first and last IP addresses on the network in the From and To fields. To add a Domain or Workgroup, either enter the name of the domain/workgroup in the Remote name field or simply double click on the domain/workgroup that you want to add in the Network Browser.

Tip

TIP: You can explore nodes in the Network Browser by double clicking on them. For example, double clicking on Microsoft Windows Network will show you all of the domains and workgroups in the Microsoft Windows Network node (such as "Microforge" in the screenshot above)

Note that on larger networks you may wish to enter the FQDN in the Remote  name text box. If you enter the FQDN for your network then auditing agents such as ENT NetCenter and ENT Network Monitor will be able to obtain a list of the machines on the domain directly from the active directory on the domain controller.

Additionally, during network audits the first thing that the software will do when contacting remote machines is to attempt to ping these machines (to check whether they're powered on or not). If you have a large multi-domain network including many sub-domains like europe.yourdomain.com, india.yourdomain.com and usa.yourdomain.com then a machine [conducting an audit] on the usa.yourdomain.com subnet might not necessarily be able to ping a machine on the india.yourdomain.com network without specifying the FQDN for the machine (e.g. machine12.india.yourdomain.com). If you specify the FQDN for your network in the Remote Name field then ENT NetCenter and ENT Network Monitor will use the FQDN for any machines on that network when  conducting auditing tasks such as pinging machines or establishing a connection to remote machines.

Once you have entered the details of the Domain or Subnet, click on the Next button to proceed to the second page of the Network Wizard, where you can enter a description for the network, along with any additional notes that you want to keep.
